Celebrating the "Dong Zi" Festival
Yesterday I celebrated Dong Zi. It is a celebration by Chinese to welcome the winter solstice. Well, that is the "official" reason. What most people really care about is to eat the chewy, tang yuan (glutinous rice balls) cooked in sweet, spicy ginger soup or in savoury chicken broth, depending on the family tradition. My family usually cooked the sweet kind.

While I was busy preparing the rice balls, I found out that we ran out of ginger, so I had to go out and get it. As I walked to the store, I passed by this guard house.
The guard house in these areas are installed by the residents and not the house developer. That is why all the guard houses in my neighbourhood are all different, as they belong to different security companies. This guard house is responsible for guarding the entry to the bungalows. It is actually smaller than the guard house in my particular neighbourhood, which was only six rows of terrace houses. The biggest guard house in the area is the one near my friend's house. The guard house are made with polished wood, and stretches across two lanes for entry and exit. The barriers are automated unlike the ones around the neighbourhood. It looks like the sort of guard house you find at the entry of large hotels, and completely ridiculous. It makes me wonder how much they have to pay for the whole building. I had sketched for barely two minutes before the guards are looking at me suspiciously. I stopped before they came to ask me if I'm a robber or a serial killer.
After I had bought ginger, I then took the time to quickly sketch a tau foo fa (a type of sweet dessert made with tofu) mobile stall.
In the end, I finished cooking the tang yuan. I must say that it turn better than I expected.
